We understand the importance of treating a child holistically, including parents and siblings in the program.
Caring for a seriously ill child is, perhaps, the most difficult and emotionally draining task any parent can experience. Not only does the parent need to face the personal trauma of dealing with his or her own pain in watching their child suffer, but they are also tasked with mentoring their child through emotional upheaval and the harsh demands of treatment.
Thanks to the support of Impact100 Oakland County, the MATIO was able to build and pilot a full parent support program that provides education, expressive outlets and psychological support on an ongoing basis. Our efforts are aimed at giving parents and caregivers practical information and social opportunities among families going through similar experiences.
We believe that no parent should face the challenges of pediatric illness alone.
If we support our parents and caregivers, it is our little heroes who benefit from a calmer, happier and more well-connected home.

Financial Support
Since our inception, we have committed to providing martial arts therapy to children and families at no cost.
However, we know that each of these children has stressors and challenges beyond our classes, as many of our families suffer financially from medical bills and other expenses.
Because we consider these families our own, we offer a family service emergency fund for parents and children in our program who are struggling financially. This service provides both basic support and mental wellness when desperately needed.
Family support includes:
- Gift cards for food, gas, household supplies
- Transportation assistance
- Assistance in purchasing technology such as tablets to connect with virtual classes
- Counseling and resources for dealing with illness or bereavement
- Assistance with utility bills, mortgage payments, and funeral expenses
- Meal or grocery drop-off for families needing some extra support
- Care packages
